There would be few artists active in Australia today with the same depth of understanding, connection and passion for the traditional European Masters as Sunshine Coast artist Anna Rubin.
To observe and reflect on her latest works is to step back to another time and place, and to personally experience a world far, far removed from our own. The printing press had only just been developed, the photographic process was still 500 years away, and there was no concept of mass media. Artists, working solely by sunlight or candlelight, laboured to faithfully replicate the still life images before them, capturing on canvas a record of European life that spans some 700 years.
Today, the artistic integrity of this period of classical realism endures, as Anna Rubin calls on diverse personal history, experiences and reflections to explore real life subjects in the Dutch School manner.
